Thank you for joining us on this journey in Fifth Grade! Here are some basic facts on what you need to know to be successful in fifth grade.

 

  • Please login to schoology for homework assignments and announcements.
     We will be adding valuable websites throughout the school year.

  •  No lunches will be served on early dismissal days

  • Lunch money must be sent in an envelope with student name, teacher
    name, and ID #.

  • Call office for transportation changes that are made during the day.

  • Please check agenda books each day and have your child bring them every
    day to school.

  • Your child should always have a novel with them.

  • We are always in need of wipes, tissues, and sticky notes.

  • Birthday Baskets: contact cafeteria

 

WRITING

  • We will be writing every morning if your child has language arts first.

  • We will be using the new Units of Study by Lucy Calkins aligned with
    Common Core Standards.

  • Students will be increasing their volume of writing and stamina for writing.

  • We will be focusing on narrative, informational, and argumentative writing.

  • Writer’s notebooks will be coming home to complete homework…please
    have your child return it the next day.

SPELLING

  • Teaching patterns in a developmental appropriate way.

  • Students will be doing spelling pattern sorts.

  • Parents will need to support and monitor student’s homework at home.

 

READING

  • Students will be filling in a reading log for their independent reading.

  • Students are required to read 1,000 pages a trimester.

  • Students will be required to complete book talks.

  • Reader’s Notebook: Students will be responding to different readings throughout
    the year on a daily basis between Nazzy block, read alouds, and homework.

 

SOCIAL STUDIES

  • We will be reading 3 chapters in a trimester beginning with chapter 1: The Ice Age.

  • We will be journeying from the Ice Age to Native Americans to Explorers: which will
    lead us to the all-important colonization of America. We will finish the year with the
    Revolutionary War.

  • Study guides and vocabulary cards will be provided.

  • Students will be required to complete 3 projects: one each trimester.

  • Students should be utilizing their lexile scores to choose independent reading books.

  • Go to lexile.com to find out the lexile of your book.

  • We will be using a read aloud and Scott Foresman, Reading Street to teach and assess
    the different reading skills.
